InterServer hosting is based out of New Jersey and they’ve been in business since 1999. They don’t advertise much, but then again, they don’t have to. A lot of their business comes from word-of-mouth backed by their belief in high-quality service.

Best Features of InterServer Hosting

There is a lot to like about InterServer hosting. The salespeople were friendly, and I got to speak personally with a few individuals from their executive team. Here’s what I liked best about my experience.

Highly-Customizable VPS Plan

Their VPS plan is highly customizable. Just about everything is customizable by the user. You can decide exactly what you want to use such as your preferred operating system, the amount of RAM you wish to use, and how much CPU power you require. With many hosting companies, their VPS plan comes bundled with a bunch of “bloatware” – a bunch of extra software that you don’t really need. That’s not the case with InterServer hosting. You choose what you pay for and only pay for what you use.

Excellent Loading Times

I noticed that my site loaded particularly quickly, so I timed it and compared the data to other hosting companies that I’ve tried. Needless to say, InterServer hosting was satisfyingly fast. I have no complaints in this area.

Speed like this is always necessary. When you’re building your website, you have to be careful with how many plug-ins you install on your site. The more plug-ins you install, the slower your site is going to load and react. If it loads and reacts too slowly, it could affect the user experience – especially for those on mobile devices. A fast hosting company with excellent loading times means I can install more plug-ins that make my site more responsive without sacrificing the experience of my users.

Uptime Guarantee

I learned to be careful with uptime guarantees. Many uptime guarantees from many different hosting companies don’t provide any compensation or even mention it in their SLA – their service level agreement. A guarantee doesn’t mean much unless the business is willing to back up its words with some sort of compensation. InterServer hosting has a 99.5 percent uptime hosting guarantee. They were careful to say that they compensate clients on a client-by-client basis. Interestingly note – they offer a 100 percent guarantee of uninterrupted electricity.

In my own tests, I found a 100 percent uptime for 30 solid days. I have no complaints here.

A ToS That Means Business

Many hosting companies – and many businesses, for that matter – offer access to their ToS, or their terms of service. What they don’t count on is people reading it. In fact, some of these ToS documents are written in such a way as if they depend on you not taking the time to read what you’re signing.

I found it to be a pleasant experience when I was reading the ToS document provided by InterServer hosting. It was clear, thorough, and easy to understand. That also means that InterServer hosting is attempting to be transparent by clearly defining its rules and stipulations and being upfront about what you might expect.

Price Lock Guarantee

Many hosting providers attempt to lure customers in by offering a low price in the beginning, and then once they’re locked in and using their service, they begin to charge them more. InterServer hosting offers a price lock guarantee. In other words, they promise you that they will not do that. The price that they offer you at the beginning is the price that they offer throughout the time that you are using them as your hosting provider.

Proven Longevity

This is something else that I tend to look for in hosting companies. InterServer hosting has been in business since 1999 – that’s 16 years and still going strong. In that time, they haven’t switched hands, had any major overhauls, or really changed the way that they’ve done business. Customers have come to expect a certain level of quality from them, and InterServer hosting delivers. They are not a fly-by-night service. They are here to stay.

Downsides of InterServer Hosting

As I said before, no hosting provider is without sin. These are the things that we weren’t so sure about.

Unlimited Hosting Is Not Unlimited

As you browse their site, you will find that InterServer hosting offers several unlimited plans. However, thanks to the clarity and transparency provided by the ToS document, you can quickly discover that unlimited hosting isn’t exactly unlimited. Check this out – directly from their Terms of Service.

“No single shared hosting account is permitted to use more than 20% of the server resources at a time. A single account is limited to 250,000 nodes at any given time. Clients on the Unlimited SSD shared hosting platform using more than 1GB of space will be moved to SATA.”

I will say this about them – at least they’re upfront about it.

VPS Hosting Has a Steep Learning Curve

There’s a downside to the highly-customizable VPS hosting plan. Because it is so customizable, it has a steep learning curve. If you’re looking for a VPS plan where everything is chosen for you, this is not the VPS plan you’re looking for.

No Backup Option

I didn’t like the fact that I didn’t see any backup option. There was no automatic or manual backup option. That leaves backing up my data to me. It’s not much of a problem, but other hosting providers do offer automatic backups – which can be a nice change of pace and peace of mind.

Bottom Line

I like InterServer hosting. They’re affordable, they don’t have a lot of hype, and they deliver on their promises. As long as you read the terms of service, you’ll know exactly what to expect from them. They’ve been reliable since 1999, and they’re not showing any signs of slowing down. Their growth has been slow – and I find that to be a good thing. Slow and steady means that InterServer hosting enjoys a substantial and loyal audience. Hey, I can’t argue with that!
